We are a group of friends who all have a link to Leek Hockey Club. We are coming together to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. There are many different reasons people are getting involved to do their bit.

My main driving factor is to run in the memory of my son Rufus Mycock who was treated but sadly passed away at the hospital aged just 7 days. I have recently given birth to Rufus’ brother Fox who like his brother is a haemophilia sufferer. Fox is however lucky to have been diagnosed within just a few hours of birth and due to having the correct treatment is a thriving healthy boy. He will however need to undergo extensive treatment from the specialist team at Manchester. This could involve lots of visits with blood tests, injections, physio, procedures that can be unpleasant and stressful for little Fox.

The key to Fox leading a healthy and normal life is the cutting edge treatment provided. Vital research helps the most advanced of treatments which should let Fox lead the life of a healthy, lively boy. He is a very lucky little boy to have been given this chance by his big brother and the support of an amazing hospital.

The charity not only help provide essential research and equipment at the hospital to make it one of the best in the country but also provides a comforting and safe environment for children and their families cope during difficult times. I am reminded of this every time we visit the hospital and the amazing Ward 84 that cares for some very poorly children having some really painful and difficult treatment.

Also I’m really unfit at the moment and I’m planning on running in fancy dress so this will be a real challenge!!

So on a very hot and sunny day our 13 strong team completed the 10k. We had quite a few niggles and injuries being carried round and were down a pair of running trainers that had been left in the car at Didsbury!! Despite all we did really well and enjoyed a hard earned beer!

I’m getting into a routine with my running now, it’s really hard but doing a hilly 2 mile route in 20 mins, will up it to 3 miles at the weekend and hope I can get in enough shape to run the 10k!!! Thank you so much for all donations so far 😊

So we’re up and running!!! I’m classing this week as a start to some training with a hockey match tomorrow and Saturday and will fit in a couple of small runs to see where I am. I have been reminded today of the incredible sunburn I got the last (and only ever) race I did which was the Edinburgh Marathon in 2012. That kind of fitness and warm weather feels a lifetime away!! Still plenty of time to enter the run with us all if you fancy it, just visit http://www.greatrun.org/great-manchester-run#how-to-enter Everyone welcome 😊
